Biography
of Renzo Piano
Renzo Piano was born on 14 September 1937 in Genoa. He comes from a family of master builders. He studied in Florence and Milan, where he graduated from the architecture faculty of the Polytechnic in 1964. After that, he worked first with his father and then under the direction of Franco Albini. From 1965 to 1970 he worked with Louis Kahn in Philadelphia and with Z. S. Makowsky in London. He got to know Jean Prouvé during that time and their friendship has strongly influenced his work.
From 1971 Renzo Piano worked with Richard Rogers (Piano & Rogers) and from 1977 with Peter Rice (Piano & Rice Workshop), who, until his death in 1992, was Piano’s close associate.
Today, under the name of the “Renzo Piano Building Workshop”, Renzo Piano has offices in Genoa, in Paris, where he lives, and in Berlin. Overall, he heads a group of around 100 architects, engineers and specialists.
In 1998 Renzo Piano was awarded the renowned Pritzker Prize for Architecture for his work.
