Wheelchair / Walker Users

The museum and museum park are accessible to wheelchairs throughout. Access to the museum is provided by a 70-meter long descending ramp (6.25% gradient). The entire interior is traversable on a single level, and has no thresholds or hindrances. Special exhibitions on the lower floor are accessible by elevator (door width 85 cm, cabin 140 cm). The handicapped lavatory in the foyer is accessible by wheelchair (door width 95 cm, seat height 47 cm) and is equipped with fold-down handles and grips. There is space for a wheelchair under the basin and the mirror is installed in a low position.

Flooring and Paving:
The museum rooms all have parquetry floors. The access ramp is paved with stone slabs and the forecourt around Villa Berower with cobblestones. The paths through the park consist of firm, sandy gravel, but are suitable for wheelchair use.

Restaurant:
The garden restaurant in Villa Berower is easily accessible by wheelchair. There is a low threshold leading inside (door width 70 cm, second door wing can be opened if necessary). Access by wheelchair to the two lavatories is limited (door width 80 and 60 cm, seat height 41 cm).

Transportation:
To reach the museum, we recommend the use of public transport. Take low-floor tram no. 10 from "Bahnhof SBB" Central Station to "Theater" stop (operated by BLT Baselland Transport AG, tel. 061 406 11 11), then tram no. 6 to "Fondation Beyeler" stop (Basler Verkehrs-Betriebe, tel. 061 685 12 12). Both lines should have low-floor tramcars available at all times. Naturally you can also reach the museum by private car or by the handicapped shuttle operated by the Twin Cities of Basel (tel. 061 666 66 66, by advance reservation only). Handicapped parking is located directly in front of the Villa Berower in the museum park (entry by way of iron gate next to the tram stop).

Special Services:
For those of restricted walking ability, two wheelchairs are available on loan at the museum (please make advance reservations, tel. 061 645 97 11). Folding chairs may also be requested at the entrance.

For the Vision Impaired / Blind

For those with vision impairments, we provide special tours with detailed oral descriptions of the exhibits, held as a rule once during each special exhibition (see below).

The museum is easily reached from the “Fondation Beyeler” tram stop. After alighting, turn to your left. After 12 meters you will come to a pedestrian crossing. Cross the street here, then proceed to your right about 30 meters farther, to the main entrance of the museum park. After entering, take the path on the right, which leads 50 meters onwards by way of a ramp to the museum. The cashier’s desk is located to the right in front of the entrance.

The explanatory plaques in the museum rooms are generally quite small. However, each special exhibition is briefly described at the outset on a panel in relatively large type. You may take your seeing eye dog with you into the museum. Please remember that the exhibits must not be touched.
