1892-1896
Berlin: Experiments and Emergent Signs of Modern Art

In his one-man show in Berlin, in late 1893, Munch presented his first conceptions of The Frieze of Life, whose motifs included The Kiss, Madonna, Melancholy, and The Scream (Despair). The frieze, previously developed in sketches and notes, did merely consist of an arrangement of these subjects in a certain order. Rather, it was an open-ended and variable scheme, like a musical theme with variations.
